How to Set Transparent in Photoshop
10/13/2010 00:00:00

Adobe Photoshop documents often contain multiple layers, which combine to make one image. When multiple layers are placed on top of one another, you must change the transparency of the top layers to allow the bottom layers to show through. Changing the transparency of layers allows you to control the way the layers blend with one another and choose which layers appear the most prominent in the image. Try various transparency levels for a layer to find the best results.

Difficulty: Moderately EasyInstructions1

Open your document in Adobe Photoshop.

2

Select the layers you want to edit from the "Layers" palette on the right side of the application. Select multiple layers at once by holding the "Ctrl" key as you click on the layers.

3

Enter a new value into the "Opacity" text box to change the opacity. A value of 100 percent makes the layer opaque. The smaller the value, the more transparent the layer appears.

Tips & WarningsYou can only change the opacity of regular layers, not background or locked layers. If you need to change the opacity of background or locked layers, you must first convert them to regular layers. References Adobe: Specify Opacity for a Layer or Group
