Without mouse pointers it would be impossible to know where the mouse was located on the screen and it would be nearly impossible to use a computer screen. Mouse pointers, or cursors, come in many shapes both in usual and unusual varieties for different computer and Internet functions.Basic PointersThere are a few styles of mouse pointers that are used in the common functions of the computer. The arrow pointing to the top left of the screen is the most used pointer style. This is the pointer that you use to direct the mouse on the desktop and to locate files and folders. Another basic pointer style is the hand shape. The hand shape is seen on the Internet a lot, and is the pointer style used to click on Internet links and to open programs inside many programs and folders. Another common pointer style is the "I" shaped cursor. This cursor is the pointer that shows up when it is possible to type something into the computer or a text box. A basis cursor is the "loading" cursor. This pointer style varies depending on the operating system that you currently run. This could be a circle, hourglass or some other symbol used to mean the computer is thinking or busy.Special PointersThere are many other mouse pointers and cursors available for use on web pages and simple usage for everyday computer use. These pointers include the crosshair, the question mark, the resize arrows that point in different directions signifying the way that a window can change in size and other cursors that are used frequently, but not all of the time. Many web sites may have their own version of pointer styles for individuality.Creative PointersCreative pointers were widely in use during the 1990s, but largely fell out of favor in the early 2000s. The pointer styles include the unusual cursor styles, such as the cursor that has floating text behind it as you move it across the screen, the arrow with a dragged shadow behind it, a magic wand, a hat, hearts, stars, animals, sparkles and unusual colored pointers. Many people found the use of these cursors difficult and annoying, which is why there are little used in computers and websites as of 2010.
