How to Reformat in WordPad

Use WordPad as a free, simple alternative to other word-processing applications. WordPad is part of the Windows operating system and allows you to view and edit documents. Formatting options are simple, but if you want to create or edit a document, reformat text by changing the font, font size and even font color.

Open a WordPad document. If WordPad is not the default program for your document, right-click the document, choose "Open With," choose "Choose Default Program" and select "WordPad."

Highlight the text you want to reformat using your mouse.

Press the formatting button--located above your WordPad document in the Font section--that you wish to use. For instance, bold text by pressing the "B" button.

Use the drop-down font, font size, font color and font background color menus in the Font section to further reformat your text.

Use the alignment buttons in the Paragraph section to align single words, lines or entire paragraphs.

Tips & WarningsCreate documents in WordPad if you need to use the document on multiple Windows computers that may or may not have another word processor installed.Pre-Windows 7 versions of WordPad have menu bars instead of the ribbon bar used in Windows 7.
